Not everyone knows that, even today, the hostel represents one of the most authentic symbols of London, a city that has always welcomed travelers from all over the world offering practical, economical and really surprising solutions. On my trip to the United Kingdom I really wanted to immerse myself in this atmosphere so I chose to spend the night in a hostel in the Elephant & Castle area, one of the liveliest and most multicultural parts of London.
The hostel I picked had a particularly interesting history: a former school converted into a dormitory. This detail alone added a touch of originality and charm to the experience.
Contrary to what people often imagine, I didn't find a shabby or neglected place. Instead, there was a welcoming 24 hours reception, and plenty of common areas perfect for socializing, playing, relaxing or enjoying a coffee in the indoor cafΓ©.
The dormitories were spread across different floors, with various options depending on needs: larger or smaller rooms, with more or fewer beds, all designed to offer maximum flexibility. The bathrooms, as is often the case in hostels, were outside the rooms but always clean and easily accessible. Upon arrival, I was assigned a bed along with sheets to make it myself, a small gesture that, in my opinion, immediately makes you feel part of the "community".
Overall, the experience was extremely positive: I found the cleanliness impeccable, in the rooms, bathrooms and common areas, and above all, I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.
In the hostel, you encounter students, doctors, tourists, temporary workers, young adventurers, and solo travelers, each with their own stories, dreams and that shared desire to discover and connect that makes travel magical.
Contrary to widespread prejudice, the hostel is by no means a "place for the poor" but a choice for those who love authentic travel, human connection and the chance to feel part of a real international community.
Another aspect that surprised me positively was the sense of safety: it was common to leave your personal belongings next to your bed or in common areas without any problems of theft or inconvenience.
My experience in London and especially in a hostel left me with a strong desire to repeat it. Living the city this way truly means opening up to the world and bringing home stories, friendships and memories that can hardly be found elsewhere.
