Visiting the Pietrarsa Railway Museum was much more than just a day spent between locomotives and tracks: it was a real journey through time, a dive into history that made me feel small in the face of the greatness of the Italian industrial past.
A large museum with steam, diesel and electric locomotives a few steps from Naples.

Already on arrival I was captured by the extraordinary location of the museum: directly overlooking the sea, it offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of Naples and the profile of Vesuvius, a frame in which it seems that progress and natural beauty embrace each other without ever colliding.
As soon as I crossed the entrance I found myself in front of a series of locomotives and vintage carriages, each perfectly restored and ready to tell its own story.
The Bayard locomotive, for example, made me go back to 1839 with my mind, imagining the amazement and enthusiasm of the passengers who, for the first time, saw the landscape parade quickly through the window thanks to a vehicle never seen before, a vehicle that made history and that has never gone out of fashion. There is something magical in observing those iron giants: they are not only means of transport, but they are symbols of an era of great transformation, hope and change.
I continued the visit exploring the various thematic rooms, each dedicated to a particular aspect of Italian railway history, I was enchanted by scale models, small engineering masterpieces that reproduce locomotives, stations and passengers in the smallest details.
Luxury carriages, then, are a real journey in the journey: carved wooden interiors, refined decorations, wrap-around seats, which tell of a time when traveling by train was synonymous with elegance and prestige, getting on board one of these carriages made me feel, even just for a few moments, part of that exclusive and fascinating past.
One of the most exciting moments, in my opinion, was entering the historical workshops of the museum, among large tools and machine tools of other times I perceived the echo of the hands that, day after day, built and repaired the locomotives, it was like touching history, still feeling the living presence of those who, with passion and ingenuity, contributed to the railway adventure of our country.
Walking in the museum gardens, with the blue sea as a backdrop, I found a moment of peace and reflection, I stopped to think about how much the railway has revolutionized not only the way of traveling but also our culture and our way of seeing the world.
The Pietrarsa Museum is not only a place for train enthusiasts, but a real open window on history, a bridge between tradition and innovation, between past and future.
I recommend this experience to anyone who wants to be surprised and carried away by a story made of moving dreams. Visiting Pietrarsa means rediscovering a piece of ourselves through the history of the journey.
