Evaluation of Calabria

Before heading to the sea, I wanted to visit the free spas of Caronte, attracted by the idea of reliving the magic I had already experienced at the Free Baths of Segesta in Sicily, about which I also wrote an article.
I must say, however, that the experience did not quite meet my expectations: at Terme di Caronte I found only one main pool. The water was much cooler than in the Sicilian spas and there was no natural mud, that I really appreciated so much in Segesta. Still, the location is fascinating: the smell of sulfur fills the air and the convenience of being able to reach it almost directly by car without long walks, makes it ideal for those seeking something simple and accessible.
When I finally began my tour of the Calabrian beaches, I discovered a reality made up of breathtaking beauty but also surprising contrasts.
I visited many beaches and the overall impression was that of being in wonderful yet often underrated places: stretches of almost deserted coastline with very few tourists and limited services, where wild nature reigns supreme. On one hand, this lack of facilities preserves the natural charm of the area; on the other, it is sad to think how much potential remains unexpressed, as many of these stunning spots are barely known, even among niche travelers.
Everything changes in the more famous places such as Scilla and Tropea where tourism takes center stage once again, with plenty of restaurants, beach clubs, and crowds of people. This contrast between wild, untouched areas and well developed tourist destinations made me realize how much Calabria is still a land waiting to be discovered, capable of surprising you precisely because of this duality.
One aspect I particularly appreciated, and which truly makes Calabria special, is the hospitality of its people: everywhere I went I found kind, welcoming people, always ready to share stories, offer advice or simply give a warm smile that made me feel at home.
If you want to find out more about the beaches I visited, I invite you to watch the dedicated video, but I can already tell you that this trip has left me with the desire to return and deepen my connection with this wonderful, often overlooked region.

After exploring my beloved Sicily far and wide in 2020, I felt it was time to look beyond the Strait of Messina and immerse myself in the heart of Calabria, a land too often described only through its most famous destinations but which, as I discovered, hides an even more authentic soul in its lesser known corners.
I decided to set up my trip as a real "anti-tourist tour" deliberately choosing to skip the most popular spots in order to focus on the less known ones, hoping to get in touch with the truest Calabria, the one made of traditions, simplicity and still unspoiled scenarios. My plan worked perfectly.
My base was Lamezia Terme in the heart of the province of Catanzaro.
