January 8, 2020 was not just any day. At Catania station there was excitement in the air, and I was there, ready to experience a moment that, for those who love trains, had the flavor of a historic event: the inauguration of the brand new POP train in Sicily.
POP is a train designed to feel modern and dynamic. In fact, as soon as I saw it arriving with its aerodynamic lines and bright colors, I immediately had the impression of something different, a real leap into the future for Sicily.
The arrival of the POP train was very important because regional transport has now become more comfortable and faster.
The seats are comfortable, there is a space for bikes, USB sockets to charge the phone and in general all the comforts of a modern train.
The atmosphere of the inauguration was truly special: authorities, journalists, and curious onlookers were all present. Since the station was closed to the public for obvious reasons, I had a Trenitalia PASS, which allowed me to be among the very first get on board. Outside, many photographers crowded the platforms to capture the best shots. The train was on platform 1 of Catania Centrale, and the inaugural journey was about 90 km, arriving at Messina Centrale.
Getting on board the POP that day felt like stepping into the future. For train enthusiasts like me , it was a memorable event. In this regard, I invite you to read my article about the Pietrarsa Railway Museum.
Subsequently, the ROCK and JAZZ trains also arrived in Sicily, very similar to the POP; today, regional transport in Sicily has improved a lot thanks to the new generation trains, bringing the train back to what it really was and should always be: the best means of short-haul transport, both for those who work and for those who travel to discover new destinations.
