In Messina there is an AUTHORIZED naturist beach with proper signs, I'm talking about the famous Capo Rasocolmo beach in Piano Torre/San Saba. The history of this place dates back to the 80s when naturism began to be practiced there, away from prying eyes. However it only became "famous" a few years ago after a police raid, which was widely reported in local newspapers, most of the time in a negative light.
Sadly, that reaction isn't surprising, as ignorance about naturism is still very common.
To summarize briefly: in the 80s the naturist beach at San Saba/Piano Torre was informally established, without any authorization, everyone knew about it and it was enough (as in the case for most beaches of this kind in Italy). Then, in 2021, police carried out a raid on the beach, fining two people for being naked. Finding nude people on a naturist beach is not that shocking , but the incident created a scandal and sparked heated debate between supporters and opponents. Anyway, I think the fines were never paid, they were disputed but then nothing was heard about it.
The beach itself is very beautiful: a natural reserve accessible with a ten minute walk.There is a large rock by the sea right in the center with a hoisted flag and the atmosphere is very intimate and not too chaotic.
